Your new moccasins are made of almost all natural products.
Like your own skin, the leather surface needs proper cleaning and moisturizing.
Quality treatment will keep the leather looking and feeling good for many years.
The very first time you wear and treat your moccasins expect some color changes. Don't let a slight color change prevent you from taking proper care of the leather. Use high quality leather products that we recommend. Some products may darken the leather more than others. Do not use products containing wax because they are bad for the natural leather of your moccasins. We recommend applying saddle soap to your moccasins immediately, and reapply a several times before wearing them. This treatment will probably darken the leather slightly but it helps keep your moccasins free from stains and prevents dirt from clogging the natural pores of the leather. Follow the saddle soap application with pure mink oil or a good quality leather lotion. Note that neats foot oil may darken natural leather more than pure mink oil. Mink oil paste can be melted before applying to allow more saturation. Oil your moccasins frequently (depending on weather, humidity, and usage) to prevent the leather from becoming dry. Don’t forget to oil the leather laces to keep them pliable and prevent friction that may fray the tabs and button lacings. Hand wash the outside of muddy or dusty moccasins with warm water, then apply saddle soap while they are still wet, let them air dry away from direct sunlight, then apply pure mink oil. The sheepskin liners or woolies may be removed and washed by hand or in a washing machine in cold water on the gentle cycle; air dry away from direct sunlight. Your entire moccasins may be washed in extreme circumstances like being saturated with dried mud (also depending on weather, humidity, and usage). Remove woolies and wash both boots in the washing machine on a gentle cold cycle with a non-detergent soap like Woolite, apply mink oil while still damp and air dry away from direct sunlight. DO NOT PUT MOCCASINS IN THE DRYER!!! ![]() The best way to store your moccasins, so they can breathe and air out naturally, is to hang them in a closet laced up to the second button from the top. You can cut and bend a wire clothes hanger as shown in the picture above to hang your boots by the top buttons. If your boot color needs sprucing up you can apply a good cream-base shoe polish, such as Meltonian.
